Land Rover Freelander 2- A Stylish SUV
A close review of the latest premium SUV Freelander 2 whose latest edition has been recently launched by Land Rover.
Introduction:
Built by Land Rover, the Land Rover Freelander 2 is a Compact SUV produced in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive version. This SUV is sold as LR2 in North America and as Freelander 2 in Europe. If comparing it with other competitors that may be referred to as ‘soft roaders’ and other traditional SUVs that are built on body-on-frame designs, Freelander 2 uses monocoque (unibody) structure. Land Rover is known for its quality that has been delivered by this company over years. The price of this Land Rover SUV starts from 34.40 lakhs.
Exteriors:
Let’s talk about the exterior of this SUV from Land Rover. In Land Rover Freelander 2 exterior mirrors are heated, body covered, electrically adjustable, powerfold and have puddle lamp. Exterior mirrors have memory function for the ease of more than one driver. Sunroof on Freelander 2 is of full size. This sunroof has electric sliding front glass and a fixed panoramic glass roof. There is rain sensing wipers and headlamps are automatic with xenon projector that provides a crisp blue-white light for viewing a long field in this SUV. Land Rover Freelander 2 four Ultrasonic sensors in rear and front bumpers are activated automatically when reverse is selected. Steering wheel and dashboard of this SUV from Land Rover uses a good quality material. The metallic bars on the steering wheels for horn looks very unique and that gives great looks to this SUV. The armrest for driver and passenger in Land Rover Freelander 2 makes the long drives pleasurable. Buttons in this SUV on inside are well spaced and large for better functionality. Engine and performance:
There are two engine options TD4-SE and SD4-HSE in Land Rover Freelander 2. TD4-SE is a 2179cc in-line 4 cylinder diesel engine that produces a maximum power of 150 PS@ 4000rpm and a maximum torque of 420 NM @ 1750rpm. The SD4-HSE though is a 2179cc in-line 4 cylinder diesel engine but it gives a power 190 PS@ 3500 rpm and a torque of 420 NM @1750 rpm. Freelander 2 has a 6 speed automatic gearbox which has been made more powerful with command shift technology.
Wheels:
The SD4-HSE variant of Land Rover Freelander 2 has 17” five-split spoke alloy wheels which have tire size of 235/65 R17. The Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4-SE has 6 spoke alloy wheels with a tire size 235/65 R17. The tires that are from company Michelin gives ample grip to the SUV and reduces tread noise while on road. Freelander 2 has got full size spare alloy wheels.
Brakes and handling:
The stiff chassis in Land Rover Freelander 2 gives an amazing ride quality. This SUV absorbs almost every terrain and makes the occupant comfortable in every situation. The pliant tall springs keep it stable in every moment. Freelander 2 uses McPherson struts suspension at front and multi-link struts at rear. The light steering wheels makes this SUV a great car for driving in city conditions. Terrain response can be adjusted by selecting desired driving conditions. This SUV gets Hill Descent Control (HDC) and hold-clutch features. The brakes are very effective and also gets Roll Stability Control (RSC). The SUV also has driver and passenger airbags. An innovative driver’s knee airbag is available in both the variants. There is ABS along with EBD, emergency brake assistance. Some of the other safety features that define excellence of this SUV are cornering brake control, electronic traction control, dynamic stability control and Hill Descent Control (HDC). HDC engages with release of footbrake to improve control on steep or slippery areas and in conjunction with it there is Gradient Release Control (GRC) which ensures smooth hill starts with progressive release of brakes whether it is ascending or descending. Terrain response a patented technology of Land Rover ensures better performance on tough conditions. Except Freelander 2 entry model it is fitted in every vehicle. By turning the dial it reconfigures the engine, transmission, traction settings for optimum driving across conditions like tarmac, grass, gravel, snow, mud, sand and ruts.
Stereo and accessories:
This SUV has navigation system with touch screen. The audio system comes from Alpine. Alpine provides radio as well as MP3 compatibility. 9 speakers powered music system uses Alpine Dolby Prologic II 7.1 surround sound which gives crystal clear music. It has subwoofers and tweeters. There are 6 CD changers in the dashboard. It has Bluetooth connectivity for answering calls and listening music in your mobile wirelessly.
Verdict:
If you are truly passionate about premium luxury vehicles especially SUVs than Freelaner 2 is a SUV worth spending for.
