Latest SUV from Mahindra and Mahindra Group

Latest SUV from Mahindra and Mahindra Group

Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton all set to prove its mattle in the auto market with its amazing performance and luxurious features.

Mahindra and Mahindra, Indianauto major, launched its latest SUV-Rexton in the entry level SUV segment in October 2012. And where this SUV takes Mahindra&Mahindra that is yet to wait and watch? Although expert and user reviews of this Mahindra SUV have been positive till date.

After Mahindra and Mahindra acquired SsangYong Motors in February 2011, all auto enthusiasts were waiting for some new entries from Mahindra. SsangYong is the South Korea fourth largest car maker. Mahindra decided to bring-in SsangYong cars because Korean cars have performed well on Indian roads in past. The latest SUV, Rexton, is the first result of the Mahindra-SsangYong conglomerate. SsangYong and Mahindra and Mahindra have written similar success stories in their respective countries. Mahindra and Mahindra had established itself as a leading Utility Vehicle (UV) and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) maker after starting its journey as a jeep assembling company. The testdrive aka first drive of this latest SUV from Mahindra-SsangYong group gave enough evidence that SsangYong will stay in Indian market for a long time and will challenge established brands in SUV segment.

Mahindra Rexton is a large SUV and is a body-on-frame new car. This SUV has been launched in a segment that already had several big players like Pajero, Fortuner and Endeavour. It is expected to give stiff competition to these SUVs. The competitive pricing of Mahindra Rexton will provide this SUV an edge over others. The curved headlamps and the chrome plated arc-grille give this SUV a stylish look. The arc grille is further complemented by trendy fog lamps and the long roof rails. SsangYong has a technical partnership with Daimler-Benz, so one can easily notice similarity in designs between Mahindra Rexton and Mercedes-Benz M-class. The soft lines give an impression of softness but this sturdy new car is all but soft. The SUV consists black linings around the lower part and tail lamps give a bold impression. The road presence of Mahindra Rexton has not been up to expectation, asthis SUV is both longer and wider than most of its competitor SUVs. The front sloping bonnet of this Rexton is rather an improved feature. The black cladding also enhances the flared wheel arches. The spare wheel in this SUV, is installed under the boot instead of an outside rear.

Chrome has been used in abundance in Mahindra Rexton, in normal circumstances it wouldn’t have done that well, but it goes pretty well with the Rexton exteriors. This SUV also has an elevated stance that operates with ease on all kind of terrains. The credits for smooth drive of Mahindra Rexton goes to its impressive ground clearance of 252mm. Rear lamps of this SUV are in the design continuity and the confident D pillar flaunts a ‘W’ suffix in the latest model of SsangYong Rexton. Badges are present in abundance on this sturdy SUV including the most attractive one that displays the chosen model of Rexton. On far left upper corner is the owners badge SsangYong.

Rexton RX7 model is fitted with a powerful car engine, an XDi270 diesel engine that has a capacity of 2696cc and generates a maximum power of 186PS at 4000rpm while delivering a maximum torque of 402Nm between 1600-3000rpm. A similar inline-5 cylinder engine has been installed in the top- end variant of Mahindra Rexton. This SUV has a 5-speed manual transmission. The RX7 model of Rexton offers a satisfactory mileage of nearly 11 kmpl, which is a satisfactory figure considering its sheer size and weight.

Coming onto the safety department, makers of Rexton kept in mind the importance of safety on Indian roads. The SUV has beenfitted with Anti-Brake Locking System (ABS) including two front airbags. Two side airbagshave also been provided for additional safety. Forbetter night visibility, aheadlight levelling systemhas been given near steering wheel. Rexton lacks a bit in handling department in comparison to other SUVs in the same segment. Considering the engine specifications, they surly have the stamina to impress every passer-by. Due to soft suspension, driving Rexton can be a little inconvenient in rough terrains. But the ‘not so good’ handling is compensated by the large 235/75 R16 tyres.

The soft suspensions could also prove blessing in disguise for the urban usage of this SUV. These tires improve the ride quality of Mahindra Rexton on city roads as they absorb the furrows and irregularities of the road. So, Rexton can be a winner in the department of comfort on the Indian roads considering the fact that Indian roads are not so famous for speed driving and have high density of bumps and craters.

Rexton seats are stylish, modern and trendy. And with style comes comfort, seats are comfortable and have been provided with right type of support needed. The driver’s seat is sufficiently elevated so that one can have complete and impressive view of the path ahead. While Mahindra Rexton comes with an automatic seat adjust function, the top-end model RX7 has an advanced 8-way electrically adjustable system for the driver’s seat and comes with a 3-preset memory function.  The preset memory function remembers ORVM settings.

The huge collection of buttons on the equally whooping wheel of this SUV can make the driver quite comfortable and lazy as well, as the palette of buttons on the steering nearly controls every function of audio system. The dashboard has pretty decent looks and the console system on the board is in continuity with the dual tone vertical split theme. Rexton carpets are light coloured and may get easily dirty considering the Indian traffic conditions. The light brown colour of interiors provides a luxury feeling to the occupants.

Rexton, the latest SUV by Mahindra-SsangYong has all the calibre and capability to prove the best SUV to customers. Rexton is constantly receiving positive car reviews from the critics. But to remain in battle against the seasoned and established campaigners like Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, SsangYong Rexton has a long way to go. Mahindra’s large network can also help Rexton in expanding its brand. The pricing reviews of this SUV are also positive, the base model of Mahindra Rexton has a price tag ofRs. 17.67 lakhwhile the top-end variant has the price tag of19.67 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).Mahindra Rexton will definitely achieve the best SUV status in upcoming months in India and surely will be the best option for seekers of sturdy and robust SUVs.
